My thoughts on 'The Iceman'

The Iceman

Release Date: 7th June 2013

Directed by: Ariel Vromen

Written by: Morgan Land, Ariel Vromen

Starring: Michael Shannon, Ray Liotta, Winona Ryder, Chris Evans

Take Shelter, Boardwalk Empire, Shotgun Stories, Michael Shannon really knows how to play a brooding, unnerving, psychologically tortured character. He’s back to tackle arguably the most dark and violent character of his career: Richard Kuklinsky. Kuklinsky was a notorious contract killer in the 80s, who is said to have killed over 100 people (as the film so proudly claims to add weight to the story). He got the superhero-like name of ‘The Iceman’ because of the fact that he would freeze his victims so that the time of death wouldn’t be known. A cold-blooded human we can all agree, however he is also a kind family man.

My thoughts on 'The Stone Roses: Made of Stone'

The Stone Roses: Made of Stone

Release Date: 7th June 2013

Directed by: Shane Meadows

Starring: Ian Brown, John Squire, Mani, Reni, Shane Meadows

Don’t have a lot to say on this one so keeping it short.

So let me start off by saying I’m not a huge Stone Roses fan, don’t get me wrong, they have some decent tunes, but I’m not a Shane Meadows tier fanboy. However I don’t think a good music film should rely on the audience actually liking the band to enjoy it, same with any other documentary. For instance I don’t much care for F1 racing but Senna was a great film. But this is film is definitely a fan’s film.

My thoughts on 'The Reluctant Fundamentalist'

The Reluctant Fundamentalist

Release Date: 31st May 2013

Directed by: Mira Nair

Written by: William Wheeler, Mohsin Hamid (Novel)

Starring: Riz Ahmed, Kate Hudson, Liev Shreider, Kiefer Sutherland

A few years ago Indian director Mira Nair was recovering after the release of Amelia Earhart biopic Amelia. With a renowned cast of actors (such as Hilary Swank, Richard Gere, and Ewan McGregor) in the leading roles, the film was poorly received, being generally regarded as ‘A dud.’ by critics and public alike. Not long after, Riz Ahmed was revelling in the masses of praise following his starring role in edgy Chris Morris terrorist comedy Four Lions. In the UK especially, everyone was laughing at the crazy capers of the wannabe suicide bombers that are the four lions. Mira Nair has decided to recruit this young talent to regain face with this issue heavy thriller.

My thoughts on 'Mud'

Mud

Released: 24th May 2013

Director: Jeff Nichols

Writer: Jeff Nichols

Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Tye  Sheridan, Jacob Lofland, Reese Witherspoon, Sam Shepard

Around a year and half ago I was sat in the cinema about to watch Take Shelter with very little prior knowledge. I knew that Michael Shannon was an excellent actor because of his role in Boardwalk Empire, but aside from that I didn't know much. So when the wonderfully eerie and tension filled study into the fragility of one man's mind unfolded on screen, I was both captivated and amazed by its absolute mastery. So naturally when I heard Take Shelter writer-director Jeff Nichols' new film was coming out, I got a little excited.
