Don’t have a lot to say on this one so keeping it short.
So let me start off by saying I’m not a huge Stone Roses
fan, don’t get me wrong, they have some decent tunes, but I’m not a Shane
Meadows tier fanboy. However I don’t think a good music film should rely on the
audience actually liking the band to enjoy it, same with any other documentary.
For instance I don’t much care for F1 racing but Senna was a great film. But
this is film is definitely a fan’s film.
A lot of the stock footage in the film is enjoyable, the
interviews are funny, their edgy exploits from back in the day are always good
to hear about, and some of the modern day stuff is okay too. When the behind
the scenes banter is shown, some of it enjoyable, although it does occasionally
teeter into the bland.
The rest of the film, is footage of the band playing. And
sometimes not even live shows, sometimes at band practice. And not just
snippits of practice, full songs of them just standing there playing in a
boring manner. Towards the end it really slips into being a concert movie,
admittedly a fucking good concert movie, but if you’re not a lover of the band
it gets a little boring. I imagine that even lovers of the band will find the
lack of interesting content is a little disappointing I think.
So, wrap it the fuck up:
If you wanna see Stone Roses concert footage watch it
online. If you’re enough of a fan that you wanna see them standing around
talking about tea, and what’s on their t-shirts, then enjoy. Otherwise, don’t
bother; boredom is guaranteed.
